The Commission calls upon the international community for an immediate intervention to protect civilians in the Gaza Strip

Ref: 17/2011

The Independent Commission for Human Rights strongly condemns all the measures perpetrated by the occupation forces against our people in the Gaza Strip represented in the random aerial bombardment to civilians’ houses , buildings and properties, which caused dozens of injured civilians’ and casualties since the start of this aggressive operation. Since Thursday, 18th of August 2011, the Israeli warplanes continue bombarding the various areas of the Gaza Strip which so far have killed (15) citizen, including (3) children and injured more than (50) citizens of whom (11) children and (3) women, in addition to targeting number of  headquarters and  public and private institutions and objects, and caused a state of terror and panic among civilians, in parallel with the continuous decline in the humanitarian situation resulting from the continuation of the prolonged Israeli siege on Gaza, which severely affected all walks of life for citizens, including food supplies, medicines, and other essential needs.

The Commission considers that the continued Israeli aggression against Palestinian civilians is a flagrant violation of the principles of the International Law of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 on the Protection of Civilians in Time of War, which ensured the protection of lives and properties of civilians in time of war, in addition to the mere fact that the crimes perpetrated  by the occupation forces such as reprisals and collective punishment of Palestinians are in violation of article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949.

With the continued Israeli attacks on Gaza and the continued crimes against civilians, the Commission calls upon:

  1. The international community to practice pressure on the occupying power to stop its aggression against Palestinian civilians.
  2. The High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to fulfill their legal and moral obligations in holding the Occupying Power accountable for its duties towards the Palestinian civilians.
  3. The United Nations to activate the mechanisms of accountability and litigation for the Israeli perpetrators of war crimes according to the applicable international principles of human rights.

End
