ICHR Press Release on The Arrest of ICHR Lawyer Farid Al-Atrash, by the Israeli Occupation Forces

ICHR Press Release

The Arrest of ICHR Lawyer Farid Al-Atrash, by the Israeli Occupation Forces

The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) condemns the Israeli occupation forces' arrest of our colleague, lawyer and human rights defender Farid al-Atrash, Director of ICHR's office in the southern West Bank, while returning from Ramallah to Bethlehem at the so-called Israeli Container checkpoint after midnight last night.

ICHR holds Israel, the occupying power, fully responsible for the life of our colleague Al- Atrash, especially since his health condition deteriorated significantly during the process of his arrest, which necessitated his transfer to Hadassah Hospital, while the place of his detention is still unknown and there is no reliable information about his health condition.

The occupation forces had previously arrested our colleague Al-Atrash and assaulted him several times because of his peaceful activities against the occupation.

This arrest comes at a time when the occupation’s violations against Palestinian citizens are escalating in all governorates of Palestine, especially in occupied Jerusalem, ranging from arbitrary arrests, attacks on peaceful demonstrations and marches protesting against the Israeli occupation’s settlements and systematic aggressive policies.

ICHR is following up the arrest of our colleague Al-Atrash through lawyers and in coordination with the Commission for Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs and the International Committee of the Red Cross ICRC. We will send several urgent messages to the United Nations special rapporteurs, especially the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders and the Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, to urge them to urgently intervene for the immediate release of our colleague Al-Atrash. Additionally, ICHR calls on all human rights institutions to join its campaign to demand Al-Atrash's release.
