ICHR elected as chair of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions
Cairo – On 28 October 2018, during its annual general assembly meeting held in Cairo, the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) elected the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) of Palestine to the chairmanship of the ANNHRI. The ICHR chairmanship will start at the next meeting of the ANNHRI member institutions in October 2019. The ICHR will presumably host the meeting in Gaza city.
The ICHR was elected as chair of the ANNHRI during the annual meeting of the Network’s general assembly, held in Cairo on 27 and 28 October 2018. In this meeting, the ICHR was represented by Mr. Issam Younes, Commissioner General, Dr. Ammar Dwaik, Director General, and Mr. Jamil Sarhan, Deputy Director General for the Gaza Strip.
The ICHR delegation addressed the status of human rights in Palestine, highlighting Israel’s continuous encroachments on Palestinian citizens, incessant attempts to Judaise the city of Jerusalem, and disastrous humanitarian situation of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The ANNHRI is a coordinating body, which includes 13 Arab states. Chairmanship of the Network rotates among member states at regular intervals. This year, the ANNHRI is chaired by the National Council for Human Rights of the Arab Republic of Egypt, in succession to the National Human Rights Council of Algeria.
