Ramallah – The Board of Commissioners of the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) elected Mr. Issam Aruri as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners after Dr. George Jaqaman, former ICHR Commissioner General, had resigned for personal reasons.

During its biannual meeting in mid-July 2021, the ICHR Board of Commissioners elected Dr. Jaqaman as successor of Mr. Issam Younes, who had finished his term of office.

For several years, Mr. Aruri has been a member of the ICHR Board of Commissioners. Mr. Aruri is the Director of the Jerusalem Legal Aid and Human Rights Centre. He is a founding member of the Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO) and a member of the PNGO Coordinating Committee. Mr. Aruri contributed to establishing the Palestinian Human Rights Organisations Council, Civic Coalition for the Defence of Palestinians Rights in Jerusalem, and Civic Campaign for the Defence of Public Freedoms. Mr. Aruri holds a master's degree in administration and a bachelor's degree in sociology.
