ICHR Calls on the ICC Prosecutor and UN Special Rapporteur on Torture to Investigate War Crimes Against Palestinian Detainees
ICHR is following up on the occupation government’s arrest of several soldiers suspected of sexually torturing and raping a Palestinian detainee from the Gaza Strip, who was arrested by the occupation forces last March and who served as a policeman in the civil police in Gaza.
ICHR views with skepticism the focus of Israel, the occupying power, on this particular incident, which came to light through the media, while ignoring other cases of torture that led to the deaths of dozens of detainees.
ICHR sees this as a preemptive move to deceive the ICC and other international bodies by taking superficial steps that usually end in light disciplinary punishments, such as reprimands, promotion suspensions, rank demotions, or suspended sentences, often after acquitting most suspects.
ICHR demands that all prisons and detention centers of the Israeli occupation be opened to the International Committee of the Red Cross. It also calls on both the ICC Prosecutor and the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture to initiate special investigations, meet with victims and witnesses, and request access to all centers where detainees are subjected to the harshest forms of degrading treatment and retaliatory torture aimed at humiliating and inflicting suffering on detainees, carried out by soldiers and guards imbued with the ideology of the occupation that dehumanizes Palestinians.
ICHR demands the disclosure of the names of detainees who died under torture, the release of their medical files to their families and legal representatives, and investigations into each case of torture and death.
The demonstrations involving ministers and parliamentarians in support of the suspected soldiers underscore the need for accountability to extend to the political and military leadership of the occupying army. This accountability should also include the actions of Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has been implicated in the deaths of dozens of Palestinians and in causing disabilities, including severe mental and behavioral disorders. It is likely that extremist right-wing ministers will succeed in their aim of shielding soldiers involved in criminal activities.
The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR), along with other Palestinian human rights organizations, has documented extensive testimonies of brutal torture and mistreatment, not only at the "Sede Teman" camp but also across all detention centers and prisons under Israeli Occupation. These facilities operate under the policies and directives of top Israeli political and military officials
