On the unfortunate events in Nablus

The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) is following with great concern the regrettable events that occurred in the city of Nablus overnight and in the morning of Tuesday, 20 September 2022. Protests were triggered by Palestinian security agencies, which had detained two citizens, Mus’ab Ishtayyeh and Ameed Tubeileh. The events involved protests and shootings, leading to the killing of Firas Ya’ish and injury of Anas Abdul Fattah. Damage was also caused to public and private properties.

The ICHR calls on the Palestinian Public Prosecution to open an immediate criminal investigation into the death of Ya’ish and wounding of Abdul Fattah. The findings of that investigation should be made public. Any security personnel found involved in violations of the law or open fire regulations will be held to account. The ICHR has appointed a forensic physician to take part in the autopsy of Ya’ish’s body. Arrangements have been made for an ICHR representative to visit and meet with detained persons, view their conditions of detention, and review the actions taken against them.

The ICHR calls on all concerned bodies, organisations, security agencies, and citizens to exercise restraint, have recourse to the law, maintain community safety, and protect public and private properties.
