The humanitarian tragedy in Gaza is worsening.
Civilians must be protected from being killed by starvation and dehydration.
The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) reminds the world that the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is deepening as Israel's genocide against the Palestinian population enters its sixth consecutive month. The famine, exacerbated by the suffocating Israeli blockade, particularly on Gaza City and the northern part of the Strip, has resulted in dozens of innocent civilian killing, mostly children, due to starvation, denial of medicine, and a severe lack of humanitarian aid.
Israel has systematically targeted health and relief facilities and other essentials for life, aiming to make the Gaza Strip uninhabitable as part of its goal to carry out the genocide of Palestinians there. While Israel continues its genocide plan against the Palestinians, the US government and other influential governments worldwide continue to support Israel militarily and diplomatically, blocking a ceasefire resolution in the Security Council. The international community has not seriously pressured Israel and the United States to stop the genocide and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. Instead, the US government resorts to deception by airdropping aid and proposing what it calls a maritime aid corridor from Cyprus to Gaza.
The airdrops, aside from being unprofessional in some cases, have resulted in the killing of five citizens and injured dozens, mostly children, from falling aid boxes. This method is inadequate and does not ensure comprehensive and fair distribution to the population, due to the absence of relief agencies on the ground. We affirm that air dropping aid and the recently announced American administration's maritime corridor should not replace the entry of aid through land and across all Gaza crossings, nor should it replace the immediate and necessary demand for a ceasefire and lifting the blockade.
It's clear that the primary goal of aid through these unconventional methods is deception and misdirection to prolong the genocide war, reduce pressure on Israel, and buy time to carry out its crimes in Gaza. The only real solution to end the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza is an immediate ceasefire, lifting the blockade, and ensuring the continuous inflow of humanitarian and relief aid, including through crossings, distributed by relevant authorities, ensuring comprehensive, fair distribution, and guaranteeing access to the most vulnerable and needy groups.
Therefore, we at ICHR demand the international community to seriously pressure Israel to stop the genocide it is committing against civilians in Gaza, respond to the provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice, ensure wide-ranging entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, especially via land, and investigate the incident of five citizens' killing, including children, in the failed airdrop of aid on March 8, 2024, in the northwest areas of Gaza.
