ICHR Welcomes the Renewal of the Term of the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Occupied Palestinian Territory
The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) welcomes the decision by the United Nations Human Rights Council to renew the mandate of Ms. Francesca Albanese as the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 1967. Her reappointment comes despite significant political pressure—particularly from the United States and other states aligned with the Israeli occupation—aimed at hindering the continuation of her critical work.
ICHR views this decision as an endorsement of Ms. Albanese’s outstanding contributions during her first term, in which she consistently monitored, documented, and reported on human rights violations committed by the Israeli occupation. Her reports have been marked by professionalism, clarity, and an unflinching commitment to truth, highlighting the systemic and discriminatory nature of the occupation in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
The Commission commends Ms. Albanese for her principled and courageous stance in the face of smear campaigns and political pressure. Her independence and integrity have been vital in ensuring that the lived realities of Palestinians are brought to international attention without distortion.
ICHR calls on the international community to ensure Ms. Albanese’s protection and to safeguard her ability to carry out her mandate without interference. This includes guaranteeing her access to the Occupied Palestinian Territory—access that has consistently been obstructed by Israeli authorities.
In light of the ongoing escalation of war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly in Gaza, the renewal of Ms. Albanese’s mandate is both timely and essential. A strong, independent human rights voice is needed now more than ever to challenge the entrenched culture of impunity and to advocate for justice and accountability
