ICHR Calls for Protecting Social Cohesion and Safeguarding the Right of Families and Women to Participate in Community Life in Hebron

The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) is closely monitoring the campaigns of incitement, bullying, and defamation targeting families, women, and girls in the city of Hebron in connection with their participation in sports, cultural, and social activities aimed at strengthening community life in the city.

The ICHR affirms that the participation of families and women in public life and in national and cultural activities is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Palestinian Basic Law and forms an integral part of the Palestinian social and cultural heritage. While differing views regarding the nature or organization of any activity are legitimate, such differences should be addressed through constructive and respectful dialogue. Under no circumstances can they justify bullying, abuse, or defamation of participants, or any infringement on the dignity of the women and families involved.

At the same time, the ICHR reiterates its complete rejection of resorting to security-based approaches in addressing social issues. It calls upon tribal leaders, community mediators, respected public figures, national leaders, and civil society organizations in Hebron to adopt a responsible tribal and national stance in confronting attempts to exploit religious or tribal discourse to target and undermine women and families.

The ICHR further calls on all parties to protect social cohesion, respect pluralism, and ensure a safe environment that guarantees women and girls their right to participate freely and safely in cultural, sports, social, and political life.
